Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi, born Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi, born in India from a well-to-do family. He was the fourth son of the fourth wife of his father. His father was a high ranking official in the local province. Gandhi ws a proponent of the nonviloence movement. Gandhi was the leader of the Indian nationalist movement against British rule. In the 1942 QuitIndia movement Gandhi gave a surprisingly agitated soeech in which he urged the people to "Do or Die." MAny took this as his blessing to use violence in their pursuit for independence.
It appered that Gandhi himself was frustrated with the lack of progress he was making with the Britsh government.
Gandhi fasted to protest the religious violence that the partitionof India brought. He broke his fast on January 18, 1948 from assurances of religious leaders . 12 days after he broke his fst a Hindu fanatic, Naturam Godse, who blamed Gandhi for the partition of India, shot Gandhi at a prayer meeting
R. Tagore expressed the vision of millions when he called Gandhi the "Great Soul" or " the Mahatma."
